U.S. hearts broken by Brazil

-Five Star, Five-time world champions-

Brazil have broken the hearts of the U.S. by winning the Confederations Cup final 3-2. After taking a 2-0 lead in the first half thanks to goals by Clint Dempsey and Landon Donovan, Brazil scored three unanswered goals in the second half to win the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup. Two goals by Luis Fabiano and another one by Lucio.

The U.S. were the only team to lead Brazil in the competition before the five-time world champions came storming back to win.

Seguia tua face n’outras faces

D’outras terras outras paragens
Em outros portos eu te aguardava
N’outras viagens outras bagagens

E me roubassem a urgência
Eu te esperaria
Porque como veio,
eu sabia que vinhas."

The B-52 Stratofortress

- upper deck -
- lower deck -
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is a long-range, subsonic, jet-powered, strategic bomber operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since 1955. Beginning with the successful contract bid on 5 June 1946, the B-52 went through several design steps; from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52, with eight turbojet engines. The aircraft made its first flight on 15 April 1952 with “Tex” Johnston as pilot.

Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36. Although a veteran of a number of wars, the Stratofortress has dropped only conventional munitions in actual combat. The B-52 carries up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons. The USAF has had B-52s in active service since 1955, initially with the Strategic Air Command (SAC), with all aircraft later absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC) following SAC's disestablishment in 1992.

Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept the B-52 in service despite proposals to replace it with the Mach 3 XB-70 Valkyrie, supersonic B-1BLancer and stealthy B-2 Spirit. In January 2005, the B-52 became the second aircraft, after the English Electric Canberra, to mark 50 years of continuous service with its original primary operator. There are six aircraft altogether that have made this list as of 2009; the other four being the Tupolev Tu-95, the C-130 Hercules, the KC-135 Stratotanker and the Lockheed U-2.

Floradas

"Ando assim,
meio arredio nestes dias de sol,
escondido dos meus versos,
com medo de luz e de flores.

Tento escrever, mas qual!
As palavras ainda estão hibernando.
E eu querendo chuvas e floradas!

renascem."

Kelp Forest

Kelp forests are underwater areas with a high density of kelp. They are recognized as one of the most productive and dynamic ecosystem on Earth.

Kelp forests occur worldwide throughout temperate and polar coastal oceans. In 2007, kelp forests were also discovered in tropical waters near Ecuador.

Physically formed by brown macroalgae of the order Laminariales, kelp forests provide a unique three-dimensional habitat for marine organisms and are a source for understanding many ecological processes.

Over the last century, they have been the focus of extensive research, particularly in trophic ecology, and continue to provoke important ideas that are relevant beyond this unique ecosystem. For example, kelp forests can influence coastal oceanographic patterns and provide many ecosystem services to humankind.

However, the influence of humans has often contributed to kelp forest degradation. Of particular concern are the effects of overfishing nearshore ecosystems, which can release herbivores from their normal population regulation and result in the over-grazing of kelp and other algae. This can rapidly result in transitions to barren landscapes where relatively few species persist. The implementation of marine protected areas (MPAs) is one management strategy useful for addressing such issues since it may limit the impacts of fishing and buffer the ecosystem from additive effects of other environmental stressors.

The Great Mosque of Djenne, Mali

The Great Mosque of Djenné is the largest mud brick or adobe building in the world and is considered by many architects to be the greatest achievement of the Sudano-Sahelian architectural style, albeit with definite Islamic influences. The mosque is located in the city of Djenné, Mali, on the flood plain of the Bani River.

The first mosque on the site was built around the 13th century, but the current structure dates from 1907. As well as being the centre of the community of Djenné, it is one of the most famous landmarks in Africa. Along with the "Old Towns of Djenné" it was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1988.

Aston Martin DBS Volante

It rockets down the road thanks to a 510-hp, 6.0L V-12 engine that produces 420 lb-ft of torque. It offers a six-speed manual or six-speed Touchtronic automatic gearbox with manual shifting capability. According to Aston, it'll do zero to 62 mph in 4.3 sec and top out at 191 mph, and they'll both come to a quick stop thanks to carbon-ceramic brakes.

The price? ... 300,000,000 euros....
